Panhandle Trip 2017 - Page 1

Thursday night on our way to Scotts Bluff we stopped
to take pictures of Chimney Rock in the dark.

There are three or four very large flood lights on Chimney Rock at night.

Early Friday morning. Mary on the hike trail below Scott's Bluff
as the sun was rising.  We were hiking to an old geocache.

We saw more cows than people on this trip through the panhandle.

Views from cache locations along the road north of Scott's Bluff.

North of Scott's Bluff.  Out in the middle of nowhere.

Great Museum at Agate Fossil Beds.  Lots of interesting
information about the history and the indians.

The two hills in the background are where they are digging
up most of the dinosaur bones.

No snakes today.

We hiked on of the trails at Agate Fossil Beds to
complete a geocache.

We had to take a picture with this thing to
complete the geocache.

Hiking around the trail.

View from the top.

North of Agate Fossil Beds we saw a herd of antelope
at this water tank.  By the time we stopped they had run up the hill.

About as far northwest as you can get in Nebraska.
10 miles to South Dakota and 24 miles to Wyoming.

Not much of a campground.

Beginning our hike up the trail

We had to gather information and take pictures along the trail
to complete a geocache.

Hoof prints from prehistoric animals according to the trail guide.

Baby toadstools.

No railings and very little guidance to stay on the trail.

We needed to count the layers of sandstone for part
of the geocache.

Recent tracks in the mud.

Met a family from Kenesaw that were hiking the trail.

Reconstructed sod house near the campground

Very thick walls.

High Plains Homestead southeast of Toadstool Park.
A tourist trap with rooms and a restaurant.

Had to get off the road to let this semi load of hay go by.

Found the geocache near the Belmont Railroad tunnel
southeast of Crawford Nebraska

Looking down from the bluff at deer looking up

Belmont Railroad Tunnel.  Supposedly the only one in Nebraska.

Built in 1888-1890 it was abandoned in the 70's.
A new double rail line was cut out just west of here.

Patriotic house in Crawford Nebraska.

Finding another geocache along the highway to Chadron.
